EEBUS communication protocol successfully implemented on the new SwiSBox-EEBUS

Bornheim, 11.07.2024 – Since June 2024, Swistec GmbH has been a member of the EEBus Initiative e.V., which, together with its member companies, has created a manufacturer-independent communication standard for energy-relevant devices and systems. This adds another active member to the number of companies that use the EEBUS as a standard protocol within the digitalisation of power grids.

Swistec has successfully tested the EEBUS standard
The EEBus Initiative e.V. hackathon, which took place on 24 and 25 June 2024 at the Living Lab in Cologne, was another milestone for Swistec GmbH. Developers from the Bornheim-based company were able to successfully test their in-house developed EEBUS software stack, which complies with the EEBUS specifications, at communication level. This test was an important step in demonstrating the interoperability of the stack with various end devices from other manufacturers.

EEBUS as a communication standard via the digital interface
The SwiSBox-EEBUS represents a significant advance in intelligent networking and grid-side control. By integrating the EEBUS standard, it enables manufacturer-independent, flexible communication between distribution grid operators and controllable consumption devices. This approach is not only innovative, but also future-orientated, as it supports compliance with EnWG §14a and enables efficient load control.

On the way to digital communication with controllable consumer devices
Gerd Hoepfner, Managing Director of Swistec GmbH: “With the development of our own EEBUS software stack, we are offering the market an alternative to control via relay contacts. By implementing the EEBUS communication standard in our SwiSBox-EEBUS, controllable electrical consumers such as wallboxes, heat pumps, power storage units or cooling systems can be dimmed in a grid-orientated or market-orientated manner via the digital interface. To ensure complete networking and communication, end devices must support the EEBUS standard. However, as these devices are only gradually being introduced to the market, existing systems can be connected via relay contacts. With our SwiSBox-EEBUS, we are thus building a bridge between existing and new technology and supporting a smooth transition to a smarter energy future.”

About Swistec GmbH:
Swistec GmbH was founded in 1989 to contribute to a stable power supply for the future. It is a leading company in audio frequency ripple control technology that has grown to become a reliable controller in the digitalisation of the energy transition.
The company’s management and employees have made it a respected and trustworthy partner for grid operators, energy suppliers and municipal utilities. Swistec GmbH offers customised solutions and intelligent products for switching and control in the power grid through individual planning and development.
Cooperations with well-known companies such as PSI AG, Siemens AG and Enermet AG characterised the first few years. At the same time, network operators, municipal utilities and energy suppliers recognised the expert knowledge within Swistec GmbH. Swistec GmbH’s developments and services were therefore utilised beyond Germany at an early stage. In close co-operation with the Swiss Swistec Systems AG, the products and solutions developed and manufactured Made in Germany in Bornheim near Bonn will continue to be offered for the global market in the future.
The future goals of Swistec GmbH lie in the further development of innovative solutions for an efficient and sustainable energy supply.
Reliable control in the power grid. With intelligent products. We do it.

About EEBus Initiative e.V.:
Together with its member companies and associations, the EEBus Initiative e.V. defines a communication standard that enables the networking of energy-relevant devices in buildings with the electricity grid and market players. By creating the EEBUS standard of the same name, the initiative promotes the digitalisation of the energy transition and ensures interoperability within energy-relevant systems. EEBUS enables more flexible and efficient use and distribution of energy and loads. This promotes the development of new products, services and business models that contribute to increasing overall energy efficiency and allows the various players to effectively implement their goals, such as cost optimisation, flexibility marketing and grid stabilisation.
