WHAT IS EEBUS?
EEBUS describes the communication interface (= application, transportation, communication) in order to allow for the interconnection between energy management relevant devices as well as corresponding control systems.
EEBUS empowers the digitalisation of energy transition by creating a data model that ensures cross-domain interoperability among all energy relevant devices and systems.
The main challenge is to combine independent stakeholder and their differing interests and interactions at the same grid connection point. Each of them wants to influence the operation of energy-relevant devices inside the building with different goals (e.g. cost-optimised, grid-supporting etc.).
“EEBUS has developed a comprehensive architecture for influencing the behaviour of a customer installation at the grid connection. This approach is, independent of the devices employed and the direction of power flow. White goods, heat pumps, charging stations, electric vehicles, and other power storage devices can all be influenced using this strategy. This architecture serves as an essential base for the digitalisation of the energy transition.”
For whom?
EEBUS offers solutions for Device Manufacturers (Smart Meter Industry, Energy Management Providers, HVAC, EVSE, White Goods, Solar, Energy Storage Manufacturers) as well as for Grid Operators and Energy Service Providers (e.g. Aggregators, Sales Departments).

Why EEbus?
The different interests in influencing a customer system require an organised interaction of different devices in this system network. To enable interoperability, the definition of data points alone (such as Modbus) is no longer sufficient. A data model is required which can be applied across manufacturers and devices. In addition, this model must be able to evolve over time. These are the basic requirements for cost-efficient market penetration and, at the same time, a high level of acceptance on the customer side.
Warum standardisiert?
Um massenmarkttaugliche Serienprodukte zu ermöglichen
Broad support by cross-domain network
A strong and powerful communication interface must be backed-up by a broad support base. Within EEBUS we are fulfilling this requirement via an open cross-sector consortium of all relevant stakeholders that constantly develop our standard and its manifestation in international standardisation bodies.
Technically standardised
We standardise the interests of the members of our cross-industry network. We incorporate the results into the standardisation process (public appeal procedures). We have a process that addresses the alignment of our specifications with the norms.
Easy installation: Plug&Play on the premises
EEBUS provides an automated plug & play mechanism without the need for specialists’ costly configuration tools to integrate devices into an overall eco-system. This will path the way to a broader acceptance for energy-optimised setups. With our self-discovery mechanism for the exchange of data, devices can communicate their self-description through M2M readable information that even may be changed over runtime. This key element of the EEBUS architecture enables the system to network devices automatically and request the device’s capabilities through EEBUS use case discovery. This unique mechanism leads to self-updating systems with trustable functionality of the connected devices without any ifs or buts.
Holistic application
The generic data model SPINE enables a broad range of use cases, irrespective of device type or stakeholder role, whereby all use cases are aligned and intertwined. Different, sometimes diverging control requirements can thus be processed in a prioritized way. This enables a wide variety of business models with the customer device/asset.
Dynamically flexible
From the very beginning, the EEBUS data model SPINE has been designed to allow for a maximum degree of flexibility. Its modular and flexible design is a pre-requisite for consensus building among the various stakeholders. It can change evolutionarily without losing its downward compatibility and it can be transferred via any transport technology.
Reliability
Use cases depending on a reliable connection implement a fail-safe/watchdog mechanism: if the communication behind the grid connection fails, the heartbeat mechanism of the EEBUS ensures that the devices operate in a fail-safe mode and return to a normal operation as soon as the communication is re-established.
Security compliance for critical infrastructure
The communication stack SHIP is using widely applied IP communication technologies. Standard based security mechanism such as TLS 1.2, commonly used cipher suites, several elliptic curves together with the certificate update mechanism guarantee maximum security – now and in the future
