• As one of the pioneers of innovative energy management solutions, Belgian clean-tech company Smappee starts with the implementation of the global EEBUS standard
  • EEBUS, the global language for energy in the internet of things, enables connectivity and compatibility of all key energy appliances within buildings and in the connection to the grid
  • With EEBUS, Smappee’s energy management gateway gains a standardized interface to communicate with all EEBUS devices and to interact with the smart grid.

Kortrijk, Belgium / Cologne 12.11.2019

Smappee, an innovative clean-tech company headquartered in Belgium, has started the integration of the EEBUS communication standard in its energy management solutions. Smappee’s key product, the energy management system (EMS) „Smappee Infinity“, collects real-time and historical production and consumption data down to the appliance level. The resulting insights can optimize energy efficiency within buildings by managing all energy flows and relevant devices across manufacturers or brands.

With the integration of EEBUS communication standards in the „Smappee Genius“ gateway between the company’s monitoring system and cloud, Smappee opens its System to many more energy relevant products such as heat pumps, EV-charging stations, photovoltaic systems or appliances that also use the EEBUS Standard. In this ecosystem, Smappee’s energy gateway can optimize demand and supply based on the standardized EEBUS use cases. For the software integration of EEBUS into the Smappee-solution, the company works with KEO GmbH, a leading EEBUS integrator with years of experience with the global language for energy .

“The EEBUS Initiative links all major energy consumers in the household via its global manufacturer-independent language for energy. This vision goes hand in hand with Smappee’s aim to be at the heart of any smart building, automatically managing energy flows and optimizing self-consumption by controlling all appliances regardless of their brand. Therefore, I am very proud to announce Smappee’s agreement on the integration of EEBUS. Our users will be able to benefit from all the EEBUS use cases. Partners will be able to integrate their products or services even faster into our ever-growing ecosystem.”, says Stefan Grosjean, CEO of Smappee.

EEBUS for connectivity and interoperability among a large cross-industry network

With its manufacturer-independent and standardized communication specifications, EEBUS provides the global language for energy in the Internet of Things. EEBUS communication is based on practically approved use cases for all energy relevant devices within buildings. The resulting specifications  are defined by a cross-industry network of companies and associations. Thus the EEBUS specifications enable the development of a future-proof, maintainable and simple interface to connect devices such as EVs, heat pumps, photovoltaic systems (PV), battery systems, white goods and energy management systems (EMS).

EEBUS allows the EMS to bundle all energy relevant devices and capacities within a building, which forms one central interface for grid stabilization and energy balancing mechanisms. EEBUS Use Cases provide real-time information of local loads and enable the grid operator to set dynamic values for maximum power consumption at the corresponding grid connection points. Grid operators benefit from this standard based communication interface to buildings to get transparency of energy demand and to avoid critical grid situations.

“With EEBUS, manufacturers and providers of energy-relevant systems can offer interoperable products and solutions based on standardized use cases. Smappee’s commitment to EEBUS will enable even more smart homes to speak EEBUS, which drives the rollout of EEBUS compatible products. We are pleased to count Smappee as an EEBUS member with deep knowledge and experience in the field of energy management. We are convinced that the company can contribute to the further development of the EEBUS specifications.” says Dr. Bernhard Thies, chairman of EEBUS Initiative e.V. and Vice-President of CENELEC.

Making buildings smart grid ready

With the integration of EEBUS, Smappee strengthens its position as a comprehensive and future-proof energy management tool on the market. Its solutions for energy management inside the building are going to support all released EEBUS Use Cases and provides all added values of the standardized EEBUS communication. For users of Smappee’s energy management solutions, this will bring a wider field of applications and additional benefits like the increase of self-consumption and use of variable power tariffs with additional cost savings. The local energy management system is also able to provide a secure load management within the building to prevent the local energy system from an overload blackout.

Smappee speaks EEBUS – implemented by KEO

Smappee works with Cologne-based software company KEO GmbH to implement the EEBUS communication interface into Smappee Genius. As a long-standing member of the EEBUS Initiative, KEO, is an expert in every aspect of the communications standard. Offering standardized EEBUS connectivity stacks and solutions, the company works with stakeholders from all relevant industries. Smappee and KEO have already started on the integration of the EEBUS standard into Smappee’s Genius and are ready to release EEBUS native solutions in the near future.
