From 27 to 29 September 2023, the EEBUSummit, the leading industry event for the energy communication technology of the future, took place in Cologne. More than 200 experts from 14 countries discussed the current challenges and opportunities of the EEBUS communication interface, which enables a uniform and interoperable data exchange between different devices and systems in the energy sector.

The EEBUSummit offered a varied agenda with top-class presentations, panel discussions and workshops on the topics of digital grid connection, sector coupling, electromobility and smart grid. Participants received a comprehensive overview of the state of the art, the regulatory framework and future developments of the EEBUS communication standard.

Wiegand Lütjen, EWE NETZ, with the presentation “Interests at the grid connection point and a practical example of dynamic control”.

A special highlight was the EEBUS Plugfest taking place parallel to the Summit in the Living Lab Cologne, a real test environment for standards-based energy communication. There, the participants were able to experience live how the devices of the different manufacturers can communicate and be coordinated with each other via EEBUS. The devices included smart metering systems, control units, charging stations for electric vehicles, heat pumps and energy management systems. The tests confirmed the high level of interoperability and functionality of the EEBUS communication interface, which already meets the currently known requirements of the new §14a Energy Industry Act (EnWG) that is due to come into force on 1 January 2024.
